Any Old Iron? Geo Cohen Sons Obsolete Machinery & Scrap Iron Bought For Munitions

$600.00

Interesting and incredibly rare WWI poster asking the public for Scrap Iron. They seem to have adopted this from the song of the same name which was recorded in 1911 (Any Old Iron). The song title and refrain is a pun on the traditional cry of the rag-and-bone trade, in this case the war effort.

The song may also be a coded reference to the singer as a gay man, or a man taken to be gay. In rhyming slang, iron means a gay man (iron = iron hoof = poof), gay men had adopted a green tie as their badge, and a fob watch and chain was dapper dressing which is also mentioned in the song. Printed privately by Geo Cohen & Sons of the UK. This address seems to be a higher end apartment complex today.

Measures- 39.5x59.5”

Condition- fair, some paper loss and flaking along edges. Some parts of the edges have separated from the linen.
