Slave World Or Free World Original MOMA Artwork National War Poster Competition
One of over 2200 submissions sent in by professional artists for The Museum Of Modern Art's 1942 competition. Artist- Gordon Webber.
The purpose was to have posters created to boost morale for the war. Artists were asked to choose between 8 themes. Production, War Bonds, The Nature Of The Enemy, Loose Talk, Slave World Or Free World, The People Are On The March, Deliver Us From Evil, and Sacrifice. Only 9 winners were chosen, and this example, not one of the winners, was never printed into a poster. They were judged anonymously, so each original work had the artist's signature covered with tape for the assessment. The tape has been removed since but you can still tell it’s there. Other than the 9 winners of the competition, the other art works were discarded by the MOMA in the 1980s. Only 6 of these are works are still known to exist. Gouache, pencil and collage elements on artist board.
Measures- 33.5x25.5”
Condition- water staining in top right corner, some foxing. Photographed out of the frame, can be shipped in or out of the frame.
